Equifax, an Atlanta based credit-rating agency, suffered a security breach on July 29th that exposed sensitive information of millions of Americans.   Such information included social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit card numbers, birthdays, and addresses. It has been determined that 5.4 million Illinois residents have been affected by the breach.

The company has set up a website where you can check if your personal information was affected by the breach: www.equifaxsecurity2017.com.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan has opened an investigation into the recent security breach, and called on Equifax to provide free credit freezes to all Illinois residents in the wake of the breach. She urges Illinois residents to take the Equifax breach seriously and take steps to protect themselves from the possibility of identity theft:
ELMHURST– State Representative Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale) invites local parents and students to attend an “Internet Safety Town Hall” at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20 at Elmhurst College’s Illinois Hall, located at 190 Prospect Avenue. The event features an interactive seminar presented by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office on how to keep teens and young adults safe online.  The Internet Safety Town Hall is free and open to the public. 

“Keeping our children and grandchildren safe is every family’s number one priority,” Rep. Bellock said. “Our interactive seminar will help educate both parents and students on the evolving threat of online predators and the many different ways they prey on kids. We can prevent more teens and young adults from becoming victims by helping keep families informed with tips and resources to keep kids safe.”

Lyons Township residents who wish to appeal their property tax assessment are currently able to pre-file an appeal with the Cook County Board of Review. Residential appeals are for taxpayers who own a single family home, small apartment building, or mixed-use property (commercial/residential) with less than 7 total units and less than 20,000 total square feet.

GLEN ELLYN– The Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force will hold its next hearing at College of DuPage from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, task force member and State Representative Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale) announced today. The task force, created last year to help policymakers and law enforcement more effectively target and combat forced sexual exploitation in the State of Illinois, is holding its upcoming hearing at College of DuPage to raise public awareness on the challenges associated with treating human trafficking victims and preventing future cases of sexual exploitation. 

Guest speakers scheduled to appear at the hearing include representatives from the Salvation Army’s “STOP-IT” initiative against human trafficking; the Heartland Alliance; the Rockford Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation; the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation; the Illinois Department of Human Services Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Human Trafficking division; the Illinois Attorney General’s Office; the Immigrant and Workers Rights Practice Group; and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.
