Bellock: Illinois can’t tax its way out of budget woes

SPRINGFIELD – Deputy House Minority Leader and State Rep. Patti Bellock (R-Hinsdale) released the following statement in reaction to Governor Rauner’s budget address delivered to a joint session of the General Assembly today.

“The Governor offered a sobering but honest assessment of the state’s many budget challenges. He is correct that we cannot tax our way back to prosperity. Structural reforms to eliminate waste and inefficiency in state government are needed; as is a top-to-bottom assessment of state spending priorities to ensure we pay our bills on time and preserve a strong safety net for the most vulnerable families in our state, including the disabled, individuals with special needs, seniors living on a fixed income, and those struggling with mental illness. Those are my priorities and I believe those of a majority of policymakers in Illinois, both Republican and Democrat.”

Rep. Bellock serves the 47th District, which includes portions of Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Downers Grove, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Burr Ridge and Western Springs.
